Airdrie Football Rises Above the Smoke

After Smoke from the BC wildfires cancelled practices, and the Airdrie Peewee Storm's opening game. Teams were starting to wonder if they would ever get to play. Smoke also caused the cancellation of the 9th annual Calgary Minor Football Charity Jamboree in support of #RonaldMcDonaldHouseCharities. This event has marked the kickoff for teams in the Calgary and Area Football leagues since 2010. For Airdrie Minor Football there was one statement that kept us going #RISEABOVE

Airdrie Raiders Bantam

Week 1: Raiders vs Mavericks

The smoke finally cleared enough for the Raiders to start their season on Saturday August 25th against the Calgary Mavericks. In a back and forth battle the game was 26-22 for the Mavericks heading into the 4th quarter. Unfortunately that would be as close at the Raiders would get. The Mavericks pulled away in the 4th quarter and scored 3 more times to make the final score 46-22.

Week 2: Raiders vs Lions

This game was an offensive shootout that would see the two teams combine for a total of 114 points. The Raiders would eventually came out on the wrong side of the offensive battle, losing 66-48 to the Cochrane Lions. There is lots of positives to take away from this game. The Raiders have shown in the first 2 games of the season that they are a force to be reckoned with and will continue to get better every week. The focus moving forward will be on getting the defense rolling and eliminating costly penalties. The Raiders drop to 0-2 on the season and are poised to bounce back.

Airdrie Storm Peewee

Week 1: Storm vs Hilltoppers

After having their opening game of the season cancelled the Airdrie Storm Peewee team was hungry for action. Opening the scoring was Rookie Mattias Young (#18). He was a force on the ground this game scoring three touchdowns and rushing for 76 yards on 8 carries for the Storm. First year quarterback Ben Klassen (#33) also had a great game going 8/19 passing for 129 yds and 2 touchdowns. He also rushed the ball three times for 39 yards. The defense was the shining part of the day though. Led by linebackers Wes Bromley (#54) and Jacob Hertz (#9) the defense held the Hilltoppers to one touchdown. The Storm won the game 46-8 and improve their record to 1-0.
