With the 2018 Alberta Summer Games now in full swing, the Big Country football team made up of players from Airdrie, Cochrane, Strathmore, Hanna, Springbank, Okotoks, Drumheller and Langdon are getting this tournament started off on the right foot.
Game 1: (Zone 2) Big Country vs Sunny South (Zone 1)
In a rematch of the opening game of the 2016 Alberta Summer Games. Big Country was determined not to let history repeat itself. At the 2016 Alberta Summer Games, Sunny South defeated Big Country 20-14 dashing all of Big Countries hopes of earning a medal that year. On this day though Big Country was the better team and pulled out a tough win 29-26. Led by Offensive weapons Tristan Remus, Liam McKeage, and Chase Hunt. Big Country built themselves a comfortable 29-19 lead heading into the 4th quarter. Sunny South would score one more time to make the final score 29-26.
"We had a 29-19 lead but it got away a bit in the end," said Big Country head coach Chris Glass. "We rotated our starters out with a big lead and we let them creep back into the game.
"Its a big win that keeps us in the A division and gives us a shot at earning a medal said Glass when asked about his teams gritty win. "I'm happy with the win but we will need to be more disciplined moving forward in the tournament."
Glass said the defense played excellent all game long. Linebacker Jack Dutton fresh off his U16 tournament win with Team Alberta, was an absolute force. Sam Lowe also put in a solid game.
With the win Big Country moves onto the semi finals. Their opponent will be the (Zone 5) Black Gold team from Sherwood Park, Alberta. Black Gold won their game earlier in the morning vs (Zone 7) North East 40-15.
"The Black Gold team is a big Strong team," Glass said. "We match up well against them and our advantage will be our speed.
Glass mentioned that running back Michael Schaan will be getting a heavier workload tomorrow and should be able to eat up yards on the ground.
The Big Country football team will hit the field again tomorrow at 1:00pm to continue their quest for a medal at the 2018 Alberta Summer Games.
