Airdrie Minor Football Spring Camp 2018

The Airdrie Storm and Airdrie Raiders football teams just wrapped up their Spring Camps. Registration numbers are way up at all levels, and the coaches and kids are excited for Fall to arrive. 2018 is a year of change and bright beginnings for the Airdrie Minor Football programs.

The Bantam Raiders appointed a new head coach Doug Robertshaw. Robertshaw brings a lot of playing experience and energy with him. He was also a referee with the Calgary Football Officals Association for quite a few years as well. I have known Doug for a long time and was super excited to hear he got the job. The Raiders have a strong cast of returning players to help Robertshaw in his first year as head coach. He will also be joined by George McDougall head coach Chris Glass. The two have worked together for the past couple of seasons and have had great success. I cannot wait to watch the Airdrie Raiders play this season.

Another change this year will be the addition of the Airdrie Minor Football Novice House League. This League is for kids ages 7 to 9 and will help to give a very good introduction to contact football. The League is about fun and learning. Kids will practice a couple times per week and play games on Sundays. My father (Thomas Rohl) will be coming out of retirement to help run this new league. I already love watching the kids play in the AFS Flag League. Now we get to see the young kids play tackle football in a safe and controlled environment. Get your cameras ready because you know there is going to be some good bloopers, and awesome plays made by these little guys.

Football in Airdrie is at an all time high right now. We have Approximately 350 players under the age of 17 participating in our local programs. It's amazing to see how far it has come since 1995 when it all started. I have coached in this city for over 20 years now and every year brings new challenges. This year is no different, but for me there is a feeling of excitement for the first time in a long time.

Enjoy the Summer everyone and we will see you soon.
